The journal has been founded in 1972, at the Cluj-Napoca branch of the Romanian Academy, under the innitiative of Tiberiu Popoviciu. At the same time, there was also funded another journal, in Romanian, "Revista de Analiza Numerica si Teoria Aproximatiei", but which has appeared only three years (1972-1974).
Between 1975-1991, ANTA has appeared with the joint name of Mathematica.
The editors-in-chief of ANTA were, sequentially, Tiberiu Popoviciu, Petru T. Mocanu, and Ion Pãvãloiu. The editor-in-chief is at present Dimitrie D. Stancu.
